Śląsk Ease To Victory Over Widzew

Śląsk Wrocław comfortably defeated Widzew Łódź 3:1 yesterday to record their first victory in this season's T-Mobile Ekstraklasa. The win moves Śląsk up the table, and will put the team in a positive frame of mind going into Thursday's sold-out Europa League playoff against Sevilla FC.
The opening period of yesterday's match saw chances created by both sides, although the game was played out at a noticeably reduced pace compared to last Thursday's frantic Europa League tie. It took 23 minutes for the deadlock to be broken, and thankfully for the loyal Śląsk fans who turned out, it was WKS who opened the scoring. Sylvester Patejuk's cross found Stevanović, who neatly headed the ball onto the back post. His effort then rebounded off the opposite post and eventually sneaked over goal line, where Paixao was at hand to tap the ball in if need be.

Paixao didn't have to wait too long to get his goal though, as the Portuguese striker struck to make it 2:0 just five minutes later. Sobota performed a great 1-2 with Stevanović on the right hand side of the box, and hooked the ball across the penalty area for Paixao to knock it into the empty net.

Śląsk secured their victory just on the hour mark, when Mila finished with aplomb following some superb build-up play. Stevanović's purposeful pass into the penalty area was picked up by Paixao, who promptly flicked the ball towards Patejuk. His first time pass then played in Mila, who confidently slotted the ball down to the keeper's right and into the back of the net. Widzew grabbed a conciliation goal in the 75th minute, when Eduards Višņakovs headed in a Alex's cross. The visitors then had a great chance to get another goal back almost immeditaely, but Gikiwiecz pulled off a superb save to deny Višņakovs a second.

The final period of the match saw Śląsk retain their foothold on the game, with WKS ending up deserved winners.

With Wrocław having done the business in the Polish League, attention now turns to the 2nd of leg of Śląsk's Europa League playoff. A gargantuan three goal comeback is required to defeat La Liga outfit Sevilla FC on aggregate, but with a sell-out crowd cheering Śląsk on, anything can happen.
