Śląsk See Off Stalowa After Extra Time

2013-08-19 14:33:09
Śląsk Wrocław hit back late to avoid a cup shock against 3rd tier side Stal Stalowa Wola on Saturday. With WKS 1-0 behind and 18 minutes left on the clock, the home side were dreaming of a scalp, but rising star Tomasz Hołota equalised for Śląsk in the 85h minute. Śląsk's superior fitness then paid dividends in extra time, with Marco Paixao and Jakub Więzik both netting to secure Wrocław's place in the 1/8 finals.
3,000 enthusiastic fans packed Stalowa's ageing stadium to cheer on their side to a famous victory against last year's cup-runners up. The home fans dared to dream the shock was on in the 72nd minute, when Michał Bogacz rose above the Śląsk defence to power in a header from well taken corner.

Wrocław weren't going to give up without a fight however, and with 5 minutes left Tomasz Hołota neatly spun around and volleyed home Sebino Plaku's ball into the box, taking the tie to extra time.

Śląsk looked the better of the two teams in extra time, and they took the lead 11 minutes into the additional 30. Mila and Cetnarski combined to set up a simple opportunity for Paixao, who slid in and comfortably stabbed the ball over the line.

Wrocław then put the tie beyond any doubt in the 118th minute, when substitute Jakub Więzik knocked in a rebound after Paixao's effort bounced off the left-hand post.

The result puts Śląsk into the last sixteen of the Polish cup, where they will take on Jagiellonia Białystok over two legs. Next up however, is the massive 1st leg of the Europa League playoff away to FC Sevilla. The match takes place on Thursday at 21.30, with the return leg a week later. Tickets are now on sale for 2nd leg of the Sevilla match, as well as next Sunday's game against Widzew Łódź.
